In the fall of 2014, I was given the opportunity for a solo exhibition at the student run gallery at the University of Tennessee. After being here for a little over a year, I had began to notice some patterns. Every friday, the graduate art students go to the show at Gallery 1010. After spending roughly 10-15 minutes in the gallery, we convene outside. We loiter in the handicap spot directly in front of Gallery 1010 until someone deems it time to go to the bar, which occurs roughly around 9 PM, or when the exhibition comes to a close. In addition, the University of Tennessee is a “dry” campus.
For the exhibition, I prepared a space for gallery goers to sit, relax and wait until it was time to leave and go to the bar. Chairs, some snacks, a nice breeze and some plants to enhance the space. A sign on the back wall reads “Time until we can go to the bar:”, as a clock counts down three hours, from 6-9pm.
